How to Enable iMovie to ingest Canon Vixia AVCHD(MTS/M2TS) clips easily

The file I'm trying to import is AVCHD from my Canon VIXIA(HF R400) camcorder. I can copy it to my computer (without Imedia) as a quicktime file and view it in quicktime-but I cannot import it to iMovie. Can you help me?
